Week 13. Which of the previous accounts of consciousness is the best and why?

References are below. (Summary of my short essays in this class)

W1. We can study consciousness objectively with carefully designed and analyzed experiments. Not only about easy problems but also hard ones, we can go forward if we investigate the quality of consciousness by asking subjective feelings directly and comparing differences among individuals.

W2. CB & AB don’t reflect whole consciousness (the problem of cross modality), only some parts of visual awareness. Both memory and attention are not necessities of consciousness. Attention seems to be independent of visual awareness (Shin et al, 2009). And CB can be a kind of memory task, comparing two different stimuli, but we are sure conscious every moment.

W3. Crowding : Attention is needed at multiple stages of processing. In low level of processing it glues features integrated. In relatively later processing, selecting one object from many distracters and making it conscious need attention.

W4. Binocular Rivalry : Attention which is a sort of the high-level excitatory influence can extend the local dominance of a stimulus over space and time (Tong et al, 2006). Lee et al (2007) found the differential effects of attention on traveling waves in different visual cortex, such as V2, V3 but V1 importantly.

There is a possibility that perceptual switching during the binocular rivalry is time-locked to gamma-band synchronization (Doesburg et al, 2009).

W5. Masking : Attention in AB paradigm is just selecting stimuli rather than processing it, compared to the masking paradigm. Attention plays a role in active early level of processing, like integrating basic features in masking.

W6. NCC : Accepting multiple NCC and trying to find converging data about diverse consciousness, I chose prefrontal cortex about VC and thalamus about background state, but temporally. At first we would better suppose a NCC with narrow system. We might find the organizations or interaction of the multiple NCCs.

W7. Saccades : Burr stick to saccadic suppression of M pathway in LGN, explaining that opposed phenomena can be result from reduced activity in early visual cortex that transmit information to parietal and prefrontal cortex (Burr, 2005). But the average strength of the shape contrast illusion can vary with whether the inducer has seen or unseen, that implicating P pathway is affected somewhat by saccadic suppression (Watson et al, 2009).

W8. Filling in : Physical and filled-in surfaces are definitely different. The average response latencies in V1 were ~12ms slower for stimuli presented to the blind-spot eye as compared with the fellow eye (Matsumoto & Komatsu, 2005), weak firing for blind spot at V1 but the stronger neural filling-in response in higher area such as V2 reflect that there are neural differences between physical and filled-in surfaces (Awater et al, 2005).

W9. Magnitude estimation : We can estimate magnitude with dorsal pathway that is faster, and then we recognize it with ventral pathway, now successfully achieve visual awareness. And in this process we need attention for sure to unite two pathways. (Treisman & Gelade, 1980) This can be why we couldn’t be conscious with magnitude estimate system, because of limitation of attentional capacity.

W11. Consciousness and behavior : It is not that big question whether consciousness cause behavior or not. Because we usually presuppose our behaviors supervene neural activities. ‘Emergence problem’ really matters so what causes neural activity? The change of environment goes first, perception from physical stimuli occurs next by bottom-up processing, and then consciousness pops up if the results exceed thresholds.
