Gott nytt år (Happy new year) !

New year eve

Nyårsklockan av Lord Alfred Tennyson (Lord Alfred Tennyson 의 Nyårsklockan 라는시…)

he Swedish New Year celebrations is no different than in most parts of the world.

They drink champagne and watch fireworks and make New Year resolutions no one keeps.

The Swedish go to church, go to smorgasbords and drink spicy glogg.

Nyar / New Years Eve
Just like most countries, Sweden celebrate the start of the New Year with a party or a luxurious dinner for family and friends. Now’s the time to splash out on silver, gold and all things that sparkle!

The New Year is a time to start a new and look for what you can improve for in the upcoming year. It is traditional to have some kind of Nyarslofte (New Years promise). The promises often involve improving your health, such as to stop smoking, start working out regularly, or cut back on sweets. Sometimes the ambition is stronger than ones character, and it is not uncommon for these promises to be broken sometime in February…

At the strike of midnight, people go outside to watch fireworks, drink Champagne and wish everyone a Gott nytt ar (Happy New Year)! Or you stay inside to watch the traditional TV broadcast from Skansen (the open air museum in Stockholm) and listen to the poem Nyarsklockan (New Year Bells) being re-cited. This is a tradition that’s more than 100 years old. Also traditional, but a bit newer, is watching the black and white sketch Grevinnan och Betjanten (The Countess and the Butler), also on TV every year.

The festival of New Year is observed worldwide with great enthusiasm and excitement. New Year’s Eve in Sweden is a grand affair. The most important event that takes place on New Year’s Eve in Sweden is that the people of Sweden gather a the Skansen open-air museum in Stockholm (capital of Sweden), to witness the recitation of the poem Ring Out, Wide Bells that has been penned by Tennyson (English poet) and this tradition of reciting the poem just before the advent of the New Year goes back to the year 1895. Many concerts and shows are organized in Sweden for the occasion of New Year and the citizens as well as the tourists gather in large numbers to watch these shows or concerts and these shows and concerts are very popular among the people of Sweden. The people of Sweden make a trip to the local sites as well as local areas from where they would be able to catch a glimpse of the fireworks display that holds the attention of the viewers and also to fire of their own rockets.Parties that are accompanied with food, drinks as well a music are an integral part of the New Years Eve in Sweden.
